Tips To Keep Your Kids Safe Online
The Internet can be a terrific resource and tool, but it can also be a source of danger, especially when it comes to kids. With all of the Internet crime against children being reported, like the MySpace hoax that led to the suicide of a thirteen year old girl and many sexual predators who prey on young victims, it is important to keep your kids safe while they are online. There are some tips that can help you do this while still allowing your child to use the Internet. Set up filters and parental passwords on every computer your child can access. Do not use the same password that is used for anything else, because this can make it easier for your child to guess and then bypass the filter. Block access to all unsuitable sites and content unless the password is given. Another tip is to keep computers in the home out in the open. Do not allow your child to keep a computer in their room, instead insist that any web surfing and Internet use be done in the living room, kitchen, or other open areas where your child’s Internet use can be monitored.
Talking with your children is one of the best things a parent can do to help keep kids safe while online. Make sure that your children understand that they may not be talking to the person they think they are. Explain about predators, and why kids should never give out personal or identifying information. This includes a phone number, address, picture, or anything of this nature. You should also explain why any inappropriate suggestions or an attempt at secrecy by someone online should be reported to you or another trusted adult immediately. Helping your children understand what dangers there are using the Internet, and how to stay safe online, will help protect your children and keep them safe.
