Piracy Protection And Video Games

Video games are commonly targets for piracy, and this has cost game makers significant amounts of money in the years past. Now some game creators, like Electronic Arts, are fighting back. The result of this has been a decrease in piracy for the protected games, but it has come at the expense of legitimate gamers. New video games like Spore, which are very popular and in high demand, have a new piracy protection feature, one that has angered most gamers who have legitimately purchased the games. The game comes with an activation code, but this code is only good to be used one time. If you have more than one PC in your household, or if you install the game and then purchase a newer system, you can not install the game a second time. This has left many buyers frustrated and angry at the game companies.

Instead of limiting the use of gamers who have paid for the game, there must be another way to prevent piracy. Electronic Arts is working on a system that will allow their games to be installed more than once, but only one one system at a time. To install their games to a new system you would first have to remove it from the current PC for the code to be reactivated. This program is not available yet, because it is still being developed, and this does not go far towards satisfying the anger many gamers feel. Most are upset because when you pay high prices for a game you should be able to install it on all of the systems you own, not just one. Game creators need to find a way to prevent piracy without infringing on the rights of gamers who pay for their games, and to strike a balance between these two needs.
