Social networking sites are websites where online users can create their own pages where they can post whatever they want as a way to connect with others online. Social networking sites allow the exchange of photos, videos, link, and even personal information. A lot of people use social networking to connect with friends and family, but it is also a potent tool in meeting new people from all corners of the world. And for unsuspecting kids, this could mean trouble.

The Internet world is much like the real world; there are predators looking for personal information such as an address, telephone number, and e-mail address, which Internet predators can use to contact your children. And children, unsuspecting and naive, can fall for almost anything Internet predators will tell them.

But it is not only unknown predators that your children are in danger of. Even people they do know can easily send them nasty comments and messages or spread rumors about them online. The extremely useful information disseminators online are handy tools for these activities, which are classified as cyber bullying. This also exceeds the limits of schoolyard bullying; over the Internet, bullies can post humiliating photos and videos of their victims. And this time, there are no teachers to break it up. Unfortunately, victims of cyber bullying tend to keep this a secret from their parents. Sometimes, the bullying gets so worse that it may affect your kids emotionally and psychologically.

Aside from that, the Internet is laden with links to unknown websites, and every time your child clicks on an attractive link of ad, there is a 50/50 chance that the click will lead to an inappropriate or harmful site. Websites can be harmful in many ways; they may be sites that ask your unsuspecting child to provide personal information about himself and your family, or they may be sites displaying pornography and explicit content, which is inappropriate for your children.

How to Keep Children Safe

One of the best ways to keep your children safe is to teach them how to protect themselves. You cannot always be looking over their shoulders every time they use the computer. On the other hand, setting rules without explaining to them why these rules are important will just make them more curious to know what’s out there. The best way is to explain to them in a way they would understand the possible dangers of the Internet. Encourage them to share their online discoveries with you. Warn them not to give out personal information and to use and protect passwords. Warn them about meeting strangers online and posting photos and videos of them. After talking to your kids, set rules that your children will understand.

It would also help if you can add some level of protection by controlling website access in your home computer. Use parental control to block out sites that you don’t want your children visiting. From time to time, check the websites that your child visits to be warned of any potentially harmful content or activity. This will help you ensure your child’s safety as he explores the world online.
